Continuous Glucose Monitoring for Gestational Diabetes
BEYOND THE MEAL PLAN: 2026 UPDATES IN NUTRITION, MEDICAL MANAGEMENT, AND CONTINUOUS GLUCOSE MONITORING FOR GESTATIONAL DIABETES
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) management continues to evolve, with emerging research informing nutrition therapy, medical management, and glucose monitoring. This presentation will review current recommendations and evidence relevant to dietitians caring for individuals with GDM, moving beyond traditional meal planning to explore the broader factors influencing glycemic control and maternal-fetal outcomes.

Participants will examine current evidence on carbohydrate quality, quantity, and distribution; low-glycemic-index and DASH-style eating patterns; snack composition and timing; and the role of lifestyle factors in glucose regulation. The presentation will also review medication management, including the role of insulin and considerations surrounding non-insulin therapies. Finally, participants will explore current guidance and emerging evidence for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in GDM, including device reports, interpretation of glucose patterns, proposed pregnancy-specific metrics, and existing evidence gaps. Emphasis will be placed on translating current research and clinical guidance into individualized, evidence-informed nutrition care.
Upon successful completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify current diagnostic criteria, glycemic targets, and evidence-based medical management approaches for gestational diabetes mellitus.

  • Evaluate current research on carbohydrate intake, glycemic index, DASH-style eating patterns, and snack composition to inform individualized nutrition therapy for GDM.

  • Describe the roles of lifestyle interventions, insulin, and non-insulin medications in GDM management, including key safety considerations.

  • Interpret key components of continuous glucose monitoring reports, including glucose patterns, time in range, time above range, and potential sources of sensor-related inaccuracies.

  • Differentiate established clinical recommendations from emerging evidence and expert-opinion-based CGM targets when applying glucose monitoring data to nutrition care for GDM.
