PERIMENOPAUSE: SUPERFOODS AND SUPPLEMENTS
Perimenopause is a significant transitional phase marked by hormonal fluctuations that influence cardiovascular, metabolic, bone, and mental health. This presentation reviews the latest evidence on how nutrition and lifestyle habits can mitigate common symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood changes, and weight gain. We will explore dietary patterns associated with a later onset of menopause and discuss specific nutrients shown to improve symptom management and support metabolic and mental well-being. Additionally, we will examine lifestyle behaviors- including sleep hygiene, stress management, and physical activity- that have been shown to reduce symptom burden. Finally, practical counseling strategies and techniques used in dietetic practice will be shared to help clinicians more effectively guide women through this stage with confidence and evidence-based care.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
- Describe the physiological and hormonal changes that occur during perimenopause.
- Identify health conditions influenced by perimenopause, including impacts on cardiovascular, bone, metabolic, and mental health.
- Recognize common perimenopausal symptoms and how they present across patients.
- Evaluate current research on nutrition and dietary patterns associated with symptom improvement and timing of menopause.
- Discuss key nutrients and their evidence-based role in supporting perimenopausal health.
- Explain lifestyle behaviors- including sleep, stress management, and physical activity- that have been shown to reduce symptom severity.
- Apply practical counseling strategies and interventions used in dietetic practice to support women during perimenopause.
