Nutrition Life Stage 2: Toddlers and Early Childhood
NUTRITION LIFE STAGE 2: TODDLERS AND EARLY CHILDHOOD
This webinar will discuss the second stage of life in this series: Toddlers through Early Childhood. At this stage, calorie, protein, carbohydrate and micronutrient needs vary as children grow and develop. This population is unique as this is where children become picky about the food they are willing to try. There are strategies to help children accept new foods. Because breastmilk and formula are no longer the main nutrition source, toddlers can be at risk for different levels of malnutrition or on the opposite spectrum, childhood obesity. Z-scores is a measurement tool used to determine a child’s weight when compared with other children and is used in addition to growth charts.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the nutrient needs for children in the toddler through early childhood years.

  • Recognize signs of childhood obesity.

  • Educate and teach patient, parents and caregivers about proper nutrition, and how to deal with a picky eater.

  • Understand Z-scores and their use in monitoring a child’s weight.

  • Use the growth charts for toddlers through early childhood to measure progress and development.
