Sleep, Blood Sugar and Metabolism: Connecting the Dots for Better Client Outcomes
SLEEP, BLOOD SUGAR AND METABOLISM: CONNECTING THE DOTS FOR BETTER CLIENT OUTCOMES
Sleep is increasingly recognized as an important, yet often overlooked, component of metabolic health. Research suggests that inadequate sleep and disrupted circadian rhythms can influence insulin sensitivity, glucose regulation, appetite, food choices, and energy balance, while blood sugar fluctuations, meal timing, and dietary patterns may also affect sleep quality.

In this webinar, registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes care and education specialist Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, CDCES, CPT, will explore the science connecting sleep, blood sugar, and metabolism and translate the research into practical nutrition strategies dietitians can use with clients. Participants will learn how to identify sleep-related factors that may be interfering with metabolic outcomes and how meal timing, macronutrient balance, food choices, and lifestyle behaviors can be incorporated into an evidence-based approach to supporting both sleep and metabolic health. Current ADA Standards of Care specifically include sleep health in diabetes care, including recommendations to screen for sleep health and counsel people with diabetes on sleep-promoting routines.
Upon successful completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Explain the bidirectional relationship between sleep duration and quality, insulin sensitivity, glucose regulation, appetite, and energy balance.

  • Identify common sleep and circadian-related factors that may contribute to impaired metabolic health and less favorable blood glucose outcomes.

  • Evaluate current research examining the impact of insufficient sleep and sleep extension on insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, energy intake, and risk for type 2 diabetes.

  • Apply evidence-based nutrition strategies related to meal timing, macronutrient balance, blood sugar stability, and food selection to support sleep and metabolic health.

  • Integrate basic sleep assessment and sleep-supportive counseling strategies into nutrition care while recognizing when referral to a sleep or medical specialist is appropriate.
