Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth SIBO
SIBO SOLUTIONS: IDENTIFICATION, MANAGEMENT AND RECURRENCE PREVENTION
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is more than just excess bacteria in the small intestine — it is often a manifestation of underlying dysfunction. Patients experience chronic symptoms including bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, altered bowel habits, and nutrient malabsorption that significantly impact quality of life and mental well-being.

While antimicrobial therapy can be effective, research shows recurrence rates remain high when underlying drivers are not addressed. Treating SIBO without correcting the factors that allowed bacterial overgrowth to occur often leads to a cycle of temporary relief followed by relapse.

This session will move beyond a "treat and repeat" model. Participants will explore a comprehensive framework for identifying, managing, and preventing SIBO recurrence by addressing:

  • Impaired motility and migrating motor complex dysfunction
  • Gut microbiome imbalance
  • Stress and autonomic nervous system regulation
  • Digestive insufficiency (acid, enzymes, bile)
  • Constipation and bowel regularity
  • Dietary triggers and fermentable substrates
We will also examine the evolving relationship between SIBO and functional GI disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and discuss how a systems-based, nutrition-forward approach improves long-term outcomes.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, participants will be able to:
  • Define Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and describe current diagnostic approaches.
  • Identify underlying physiologic drivers and risk factors that contribute to SIBO development and recurrence.
  • Evaluate treatment strategies including pharmacologic, herbal, dietary, and prokinetic interventions, with supporting evidence.
  • Develop a prevention framework addressing motility, microbiome support, stress physiology, digestive capacity, and bowel regularity.
  • Implement and monitor individualized nutrition care plans to improve long-term symptom resolution.
  • Identify clinician and patient resources for continued education and support.
