Nutrition Life Stage 3: Preteen to Adolescence
NUTRITION LIFE STAGE 3: PRETEEN TO ADOLESCENCE
This webinar will focus on the third stage of life: preteen through adolescence—a period marked by rapid growth, hormonal changes, and increasing independence. Nutritional needs for calories, protein, carbohydrates, and micronutrients rise significantly due to puberty, skeletal development, and heightened physical activity. Growth charts remain a valuable tool for monitoring trends through age 20. During this stage, food choices are increasingly influenced by peers, media, and social platforms rather than the family unit. As adolescents begin to seek information independently—often online—dietitians play a critical role in guiding them toward credible nutrition sources, teaching label literacy, and supporting informed decisions around meals, snacks, and dining out.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the nutrient needs for male and females in the adolescent stage of life.

  • Recognize growth spurts in the growing teen.

  • Educate and teach parents and caregivers about proper nutrition for teens.

  • Educate and teach teens how to find reliable nutrition information on the internet.

  • Teach teens how to read the nutrition facts label in a simplified way.
