This webinar is perfect for the Registered Dietitian or NDTR who has been away from the classroom and wants to "brush up" on Nutritional Biochemistry. It is also a great review for RD-eligible participants who would like to review for their upcoming RD exam. We will review how the body regulates serum pH, including a review of endogenous and exogenous acids, systems and organs involved in pH balance, acid-base disorders and their treatments, and explain the difference between balancing the pH of your blood versus urine. We will also examine the role of the RDN in Chronic Kidney Disease as it relates to acid-base balance.

Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:

Describe the endogenous and exogenous sources of acids in the body.

Name all body systems and organs involved in the regulation of acid-base balance (serum pH).

Describe how the systems work together and in what order to maintain acid-base balance in the body.

Describe the meaning of "compensation" as it relates to acid-based balance.

Understand the different acid-base disorders, namely metabolic acidosis and alkalosis and respiratory acidosis and alkalosis.

Understand the circumstances, usefulness, and controversies of an "alkaline" diet, as it relates to health and kidney disease.
