All About ARFID: Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder
ALL ABOUT ARFID: AVOIDANT/RESTRICTIVE FOOD INTAKE DISORDER
Have you heard about ARFID, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder? ARFID became an official eating disorder diagnosis in 2013 with the release of the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, 5th edition). The criteria was added and ARFID became an eating disorder along with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. You may be asking, "What exactly is ARFID?" There are many ways that ARFID is similar to other disorders, but it is a very specified and separate diagnosis. Registered Dietitians have an important role to play in treating this eating disorder at all stages. Those who work with pediatric or neurodiverse populations may be especially interested in learning more about ARFID. In this webinar, attendees will learn what ARFID is, the diagnostic criteria for ARFID, and how ARFID should be treated. Two case studies will be examined.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Define Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and its diagnostic criteria.

  • Differentiate ARFID from other eating disorders.

  • State the signs and symptoms of ARFID and how to assess what treatment is needed.
