Nutritional Deficiencies in Chronic Alcoholism
NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES IN CHRONIC ALCOHOLISM
Excessive alcohol consumption is a widespread issue in developed countries, leading to a significant prevalence of nutritional deficiencies. The impact of alcohol on nutrition is twofold: it affects the intake and metabolism of nutrients directly, and it also causes damage to vital organs, resulting in secondary nutritional complications. The consequences of heavy alcohol use are substantial, leading to both morbidity and mortality.

While it is challenging to predict who will develop malnutrition as a result of moderate to heavy alcohol consumption, sustained and heavy alcohol use is known to cause malnutrition. This malnutrition can manifest as deficiencies in micronutrients or as protein and calorie malnutrition.

In this webinar, we will delve into the epidemiology, pathogenesis, assessment, and treatment of malnutrition in individuals who engage in sustained heavy alcohol use.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the pathogenesis of malnutrition in chronic alcoholism.

  • Understand nutritional deficiencies seen in in chronic alcoholism including specific macro nutrients and micronutrients.

  • Identify signs and symptoms of nutrition deficiency in chronic alcoholism and recommendations for treatment of malnutrition.

  • Understand the relationship between chronic alcoholism and organ injury and how this may impact nutrition status.
