Using Nutrition To Combat Mental Health Disorders
NUTRITION FOR DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
It is estimated that mental health disorders (i.e., depression, anxiety, ADHD, dementia, etc.) and substance abuse disorders represent the largest global disease burden, exceeding heart disease and cancer. Individuals struggling with mental health disorders are also at higher risk for comorbidities. Nutrition has been implicated in behavior, mood, and the pathology and treatment of mental illness. As a result, a new field of research and application, known as nutritional psychiatry, has emerged. It has also been established that other lifestyle factors, such as sleep and exercise, influence mental health. Join our presenter as she shares a blueprint for evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle interventions to help individuals struggling with depression and anxiety - two of the most common mental health disorders.

Attendees will also receive a diet, nutrition and mental health toolkit that includes a two-week meal plan and quickstart checklist to use with patients or clients.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Review and define mental health disorders prevalence, current treatments and outcomes with a specific focus on depression and anxiety.

  • Discuss the emerging field of nutritional psychiatry and the current research supporting the use of foods and supplements in the management of depression and anxiety.

  • Introduce the anti-depression food scale and practical application for individuals.

  • Examine the role of stress, sleep and exercise on depression and anxiety and introduce manageable interventions.
