Diabetes is currently one of the fastest growing chronic disease in the United States and around the world. It is an umbrella term for a heterogeneous groups of disorders that meet a single criterion for diagnosis: hyperglycemia. Clinical presentations and complexities of diabetes management often present difficulties to the practicing healthcare providers. Safe and effective use of injectables and oral glucose lowering medications and many other interventions may require "thinking-out-of-the-box" even for experienced clinicians. Considerations that should be included along with hyperglycemia are management of hypoglycemia, complications such as chronic kidney disease and comorbidities such as obesity and worsening insulin resistance. These are some of the few factors that require a thoughtful approach to the management of individual patients.
As healthcare providers, we strive towards a common goal--better outcomes for our patients. We want to aim for individualized, patient-centered services and care. This webinar will provide a comprehensive update and review of current practice standards related to diabetes. Practical and relevant evidence-based therapies and management strategies will be discussed. Concepts of assessment, prevention, intervention, self-management education and team management will be integrated into the webinar. The goal is to provide the highest quality diabetes education to assist clinicians in providing care for each patient.
Upon successful completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
Discuss evidence-based diabetes management strategies that can improve clinical outcomes.
Understand Medical Nutrition Therapy guidelines for diabetes.
Identify challenges presented by different forms of diabetes and set treatment and interventions goals accordingly.
Review hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia treatment guidelines.
FOR CDEs: This Course Qualifies for CE Credit!
To satisfy the requirement for renewal of certification according to the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE, www.ncbde.org), courses must relate to diabetes and be part of the list of recognized providers of the NCBDE. The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is listed as an NCBDE recognized provider.
