The Role of Nutrition in Alzheimer's Disease Prevention
THE ROLE OF NUTRITION IN ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE PREVENTION
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disease that destroys memory and cognitive ability. Among the most common symptoms are difficulty remembering, apathy, depression, impaired judgment, disorientation, confusion, behavior changes, difficulty speaking, swallowing, and walking. Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death across all ages in the United States and it is the 5th leading cause of death for those aged 65 and older.

Although the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease increases with age (it is estimated that individuals 85 years and older have double to triple the risk compared to the elderly between 75 and 85 years, lifestyle factors including dietary and nutritional factors in midlife have been associated with Alzheimer's disease diagnosis later in life. Recent studies have shown that structural changes in the hippocampus region of the brain that occur in midlife are associated with Alzheimer's disease in the elderly. Studies have also shown some lifestyle factors, including specific nutrients to increase hippocampus volume and function. In this lecture, we will review the most up to date research regarding lifestyle factors associated with Alzheimer's disease with special emphasis on nutritional factors.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Summarize the association between lifestyle factors and neurogenesis and brain atrophy.

  • Discuss the impact of dietary patterns and selected nutrients on hippocampus structure and function.
