Dietitian Roadmap to Functional Nutrition
Functional nutrition is an approach that focuses not only on addressing the root cause of disease and restoring function to the body, but on the importance of considering all aspects of an individual's lifestyle, biology and diet when providing care. This presentation will touch on both the history and current status of the functional medicine movement and highlight how exploring sleep, GI function, stress levels, environment and genetic variability as well as emotional and mental health is essential to the nutrition care process. As the nutrition health culture shifts towards a more personalized approach, RDN’s are set up to be at the forefront of providing integrative and individualized nutritional counseling that may make a difference in improving the current healthcare system.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Define and describe integrative and functional medicine.

  • Describe the interconnected roles that diet, sleep, exercise, environment stress and digestion play in a holistic health picture.

  • Apply and implement basic integrative and functional medicine principles into clinical practice.

  • Identify opportunities for continuing education in integrative and functional nutrition.
