Malnutrition-Inflammation Complex Syndrome in End Stage Renal Disease
Dietitians working with End Stage Renal Disease know the prevalence of inflammation and malnutrition in the dialysis population. This webinar will discuss the interplay between the two conditions, as researchers have found that they are greatly intertwined. The term "Malnutrition Inflammation Complex Syndrome" (MICS) has been coined to describe this complicated interaction. This webinar will delve into the many causes of this syndrome, explain how protective factors for dialysis patients differ from the general population, discuss how to identify patients suffering from MICS, and review ways the dietitian can help with treatment.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Define Malnutrition Inflammation Complex Syndrome (MICS).

  • Understand how inflammation and malnutrition influence each other and contribute negatively to the health of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients.

  • Recognize inflammatory lab markers.

  • Explain the various risk factors associated with the development of MICS.

  • Identify nutritional approaches to reducing inflammation and malnutrition in ESRD.

Natalie Hellman, MS, RD, LDN works as a registered dietitian at two dialysis clinics in Nashville, Tennessee. Before discovering her love for renal nutrition, Natalie had worked at a cardiac hospital and at an eating disorder/addiction facility. At her current job as a dialysis dietitian, she enjoys helping her patients interpret their lab results and educating them about how the foods they choose can impact their health and lifestyle. In working with an elderly population, Natalie has become very aware of the importance of fostering healthy habits earlier in life to reduce future health issues. She is extremely interested in researching and learning more about nutrition as preventative medicine.
