The Wahls Protocol for Multiple Sclerosis
THE WAHLS PROTOCOL FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS: EVIDENCE, CLINICAL APPLICATIONS, AND INTEGRATIVE LIFESTYLE STRATEGIES
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic immune-mediated neurodegenerative disease that affects nearly one million people in the United States. Although disease-modifying therapies remain the cornerstone of treatment, growing evidence suggests that nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, and other lifestyle interventions may improve fatigue, quality of life, and overall function. This presentation reviews the scientific evidence supporting the Wahls Protocol, discusses the biologic rationale behind its dietary and lifestyle recommendations, compares it with the MIND diet and other evidence-based nutrition strategies, and provides practical guidance for implementing sustainable behavior change in individuals living with MS and related neurodegenerative conditions. The presentation emphasizes an evidence-based, patient-centered approach while acknowledging the current limitations of the literature.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Describe the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and nutrition considerations of multiple sclerosis and related neurodegenerative diseases.

  • Summarize Dr. Terry Wahls' clinical journey and the development of the Wahls Protocol.

  • Evaluate the current evidence supporting the Wahls Protocol, including findings from clinical trials and observational studies.

  • Compare the Wahls Protocol with other dietary approaches for neurological health, including the MIND diet.

  • Identify key nutrition and lifestyle interventions that may improve fatigue, quality of life, physical function, and overall health in individuals with MS.

  • Discuss practical strategies for facilitating long-term behavior change in patients living with chronic neurological disease.
