QUALITY IMPROVEMENT IN DIALYSIS: THE ROLE OF THE RENAL RD
Quality Improvement is a fundamental core function of the interdisciplinary team in dialysis. Renal dietitians are well-positioned to identify opportunities for improvement, determine root causes, and implement action plans in response to unfavorable trends in key performance metrics. In this course the learner will develop the essential quality improvement skills needed to drive better clinic-level outcomes and help improve quality of life for their patients.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify the role of the RD in contributing to quality improvement across key performance indicators in ESRD.


  • Understand how to identify unfavorable trends in outcomes.


  • Understand how to complete a robust root cause analysis to identify actionable steps that improve care.


  • Identify opportunities to engage with the interdisciplinary team in the implementation of action plans.

About the Presenter: Liza Orengo, MPH, RD
Liza Orengo

Liza Orengo is a Registered Dietitian and board-certified specialist in Renal Nutrition. She received her BS in Human Biology from Cornell in 2007 and completed her Master in Public Health from the University of Washington in 2015. Liza has worked in renal nutrition with dialysis patients for eleven years, including spending three years as a dialysis facility manager.

Liza currently works part-time as a dialysis dietitian for Fresenius in Madison, WI. When she’s not in her clinic, she works on her own renal-specific private practice called ACORN Dietetics, which she launched in July of 2019. ACORN stands for Advancing Clinical Outcomes in Renal Nutrition, and speaks to her passion for helping this unique patient population achieve the best clinical outcomes while maintaining a high quality of life.
