TREATMENT OF MICRONUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES AFTER BARIATRIC SURGERY 2023
Obesity is a disease affecting the health of many. According to the CDC-The center for disease control, data from 2022 showed approximately 22 states now have an obesity rate =35%. Just 10 years ago no state had an adult obesity prevalence at or about 35%.

Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) is increasing every year with greater than 300,000 procedures performed worldwide in 2020-2021.

Nutritional deficiencies can develop after all types of MBS. Pre and post op nutrition is critical for success. Untreated micronutrient deficiencies can leave patients with chronic conditions that in some cases cause permanent physical damage.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the ASMBS-American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery guidelines for vitamins and minerals after Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS).

  • Understand the treatment for micronutrient deficiencies and toxicities after MBS, including pregnancy.

  • Understand what labs should be ordered pre and post op MBS and special population groups.

  • Become familiar with Bariatric vitamins, supplements and the foods, medications and supplements that can interfere with absorption.
