PCOS NUTRITION: IMPROVE METABOLIC AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH VIA LIFESTYLE AND DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. This syndrome can affect a women’s physical, metabolic and emotional health. Commonly diagnosed after women have experienced infertility, PCOS is also associated with hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenism which can cause central adiposity and increased risk of diabetes as well as cardiovascular disease. After conception, women with PCOS have increased risk of gestational diabetes. A healthy diet and lifestyle have been recognized as the core of non-pharmacological treatment of PCOS. In this course we will review current evidence supporting specific nutrition recommendations to improve fertility as well as overall metabolic health. Furthermore, we will discuss dietary supplements that have been found to improve metabolic and reproductive health in those with PCOS. Also we will review free educational resources that are available to use when working with women with PCOS.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
- Explain symptoms, diagnostic criteria and lab tests used to assess Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) as well as common health complications associated with this endocrine disorder.
- Discuss nutrition interventions and eating patterns that have been shown to decrease weight, improve insulin sensitivity, decrease markers of inflammation and regulate menstrual cycles.
- Describe dietary supplements that may compliment or substitute medicine in setting of medication intolerance.
- Identify dietary supplements which may improve insulin sensitivity, restore menstrual cycles and improve lipid profiles.

About the Presenter: Lauren Talbert, RD, CSO, LDN, CDCES
Lauren Talbert, RD, CSO, LDN, CDCES, is a registered dietitian. Lauren has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in both dietetics and food and nutritional science from the University of Vermont. She completed her dietetic internship at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Lauren has spent more than 12 years working in the Program in Women’s Oncology within Women and Infants Hospital and currently is one of four board certified specialists in oncology nutrition in Rhode Island. Lauren is also a certified diabetes educator and works as an outpatient dietitian in the Department of Medicine within Women & Infants Hospital. In addition to meeting with oncology patients, Lauren specializes in women’s health specifically women with diabetes, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and pregnant women. Lauren has been most recognized for her presentations to a wide array of audiences including medical professionals, patients and family as well as the community.
