CARB COUNTING VS PLANT-BASED DIETS: WHAT TO RECOMMEND TO DIABETIC PATIENTS
Diabetes is a condition of hyperglycemia. Type 2 diabetes patients develop insulin resistance, while those diagnosed with type 1 do not secret enough of this pancreatic hormone. Since 1920s carbohydrate counting has been recommended to type 1 diabetes patients. This method of blood glucose management has also been utilized among type 2 diabetes patients in the last several decades. Adopting a plant-based diet is a relatively new approach to controlling blood glucose and managing diabetes. Findings from published to date studies include impact on diabetes prevention, management, and prevention of diabetic comorbidities with plant-based diet. The efficacy of using one vs. the other method of glucose control has been compared. In this lecture, we will review available data on impact of carbohydrate counting vs. plant-based diet on blood glucose management. The content will also include impact of these diets on diabetic comorbidities. Finally, we will review data on adherence to these respective diets by patients.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Summarize principles of carbohydrate counting and plant-based diets.

  • Review findings from studies that compared the efficacy of using carbohydrate counting and plant-based diets on blood glucose management.

  • Recap available data regarding the impact of the diets on diabetic comorbidities.
