Family-Based Nutrition Counseling
FAMILY-BASED NUTRITION COUNSELING AND DISORDERED EATING TREATMENT
Family-based treatment (FBT) has now been used for over a decade as a standard in treatment of anorexia nervosa (Lock & LeGrange 2005). Methods studied and used for FBT originally did not involve registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) or any nutrition counselor at all. How can we as RDNs be involved with FBT? How can we provide family-based nutrition counseling (FBNC) in other ways? Is FBNC beneficial for all types of disordered eating (DE)? Current treatment philosophies include the RDN and more information is available to guide RDNs in participating in FBT. Standards of care for DE treatment have recently been updated by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (J Acad Nutr Diet 2020). This webinar will discuss FBNC and how RDNs can counsel families to aid in treatment of children and adolescents with DE. Ways to provide the support and direction needed for families will be presented, and case study examples will be examined.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Define different types of family-based counselingfor disordered eating (DE).

  • Understand how to provide family-based nutrition counseling (FBNC).

  • Decidewhen FBNC is appropriate for DE treatment.

  • Apply learned principles to case study examples.
