Patient with Osteoporosis
Counseling patients on nutrition and bone health can be challenging in a world where misconceptions abound about the disease itself and the role nutrition plays. Patients often come in with both practical and scientific questions about bone disease, diet, supplements, and medications for osteoporosis. Dietitians who counsel patients with osteoporosis and at high risk for fracture need to be prepared to help patients develop a plan for nutrition and bone health that works for them and follows the best in evidence-based therapy.
Upon successful completion of this 1.5 hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Describe the disease process of osteoporosis.

  • Describe the negative personal and economic outcomes of fractures.

  • Describe the major barriers to patients seeking diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.

  • List and discuss misconceptions that patients may have about the role of nutrition in managing and treating osteoporosis.

  • Define adequate intakes of calcium and vitamin D.

  • Describe how to assess patients for adequate intakes of calcium and vitamin D.

  • Describe how to counsel patients on calcium and vitamin D intake.

About the Presenter: Beth Kitchin, PhD, RDN
Beth Kitchin

Beth Kitchin, PhD, RDN, is an Assistant Professor in the UAB Department of Nutrition Sciences where she is the director of the Nutrition Minor Program and teaches several nutrition courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Kitchin is the patient educator and a researcher at UAB's Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Clinic at the Kirklin Clinic. She is a weekly contributor on the popular Good Day Alabama morning news program, blogs at The Kitchin Sink and tweets at @DrBethK. She earned her BS in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics from James Madison University, her MS in Human Nutrition and Foods from Virginia Tech, and her PhD in Health Education and Promotion from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
