Basics of Bariatric Nutrition
BASICS OF BARIATRIC NUTRITION

Bariatric surgery provides a successful and durable treatment option for those with clinically severe obesity who don't respond to traditional diet and lifestyle therapies. With the world-wide prevalence of obesity and particularly the increasing rates of severe obesity, a patient with a history of bariatric surgery may present in any dietitian's practice. Thus, it is beneficial for registered dietitians to be familiar with the basic nutritional needs of these patients including diet and supplement recommendations, indicated laboratory analyses, and considerations for special circumstances including weight regain and pregnancy.
Upon successful completion of this 1 hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • List the most common types of bariatric surgeries performed and their mechanisms of action.

  • Summarize the post-operative diet and supplement recommendations.

  • Describe special considerations for clients with weight regain or who become pregnant following bariatric surgery.
