DSMES ADCES Accreditation and ADA Recognition Requirements for Medicare Billing
DSMES ADCES ACCREDITATION AND ADA RECOGNITION REQUIREMENTS FOR MEDICARE BILLING
As an RDN, if you answer “YES” to any of these questions, then you will want to sign up for this webinar:

  1. Do you want to expand your skills and resume to be more valuable to your employer?
  2. Do you want to directly bill Medicare for a benefit other than MNT?
  3. Are you interested in diabetes and caring for patients with this condition?
  4. Do you want to bring in extra reimbursement revenue into your OP place of work?
  5. Do you want to earn extra consulting revenue for yourself based on your work with Diabetes SelfManagement Education and Support/Training?
From 2001 to 2020, diabetes prevalence significantly increased among US adults 18 or older.

  • 37.3 million people have diabetes—that’s 11.3% of the US population.
  • 28.7 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes.
  • 8.5 million people who have diabetes have not been diagnosed and do not know they have it.
  • In the last 50 years, diabetes numbers have shut up drastically and even the increase from 2011 was nearly 1.5% from 25.8 million! (Source: CDC.gov)
You can see that people with diabetes need your help as RDNs to educate them on their condition so they do not suffer the ravages of diabetes acute and chronic complications. How? By offering a Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support program (called Diabetes self-Management Training, DSMT, by Medicare) in your place of work. Yes, RDNs can directly bill Medicare Part B and several other health insurers for DSMES/T in nearly all outpatient settings in most, if not all, healthcare facilities.

Here's the really great news: the RDN does NOT need to be a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) in order to directly bill Medicare. But what is required by Medicare (and some other insurers) is for your DSMES/T program to have ADCES accreditation or ADA recognition. Healthy Eating is one of the 9 core topics taught in this program, along withphysical activity (what you as a RDN know best!)…and a evidenced-based curriculum will guide your teaching of the other topics. Medicare pays for 10 hours of DSMT in the first year, and 2 hours in each subsequent year.

Mary Ann Hodorowicz has taught DSMES/T for over 30 years: "The satisfaction of helping so many people has opened so many consulting jobs for me with diabetes-related companies…this is a real career-booster!"

Guest Speaker: This webinar includes a segment by Marci Butcher, RDN, CDCES, FADCES. Marci has over 33 years of working in diabetes care and education, was awarded the 2017 National AADE Diabetes Educator of the Year, and is an ADCES Fellow.
At the conclusion of this 2 hour webinar, you will be able to:

  • State the main reason that a DSMES/T program should seek either ADCES Accreditation or ADA Recognition(hint: has to do with reimbursement).

  • Name the benefits of obtaining and maintaining DSMES/T program certification (i.e., Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists Accreditation or American Diabetes Association Recognition).Note: Medicare calls these "certification".

  • Name all the completed forms required in the de-identified patient chart that is submitted to ADCES or ADA as part of the original application.

  • State the ADA and the ADCES names of the 2 types of off-site locations for a DSMES/T program and explain the key differences.

  • Name the titles of each of the brand new (2022) 6 National Standards of DSMES (NSDSMES). Must adhere to them for certification.

  • Name the required steps to achieve accreditation or recognition summarized in the mnemonic D.I.A.B.E.T.E.S. T.R.A.I.N.I.N.G.

  • Name the variables that affect how long it will take to achieve ADCES accreditation or ADArecognition. (Can be less than 6 months, if you have many of the variables already in place.

FOR CDCESs: This Course Qualifies for CE Credit!

To satisfy the requirement for renewal of certification according to the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE, www.cbdce.org), courses must relate to diabetes and be part of the list of recognized providers of the CBDCE. The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is listed as an CBDCE recognized provider. Because Dietitian Central has been granted accreditation by the CDR, it therefore meets the criteria as an approved provider of CEs for CDCESs by the CBDCE. The CBDCE does not directly approve continuing education for any specific webinar or self study course.
