ONCOLOGY NUTRITION: HELPING PATIENTS NAVIGATE THEIR JOURNEY THROUGH TREATMENT
The rates of cancer continue to climb, especially those related to lifestyle diseases, and there’s more demand for Registered Dietitians to have a clinical understanding of how different cancers affect people. This webinar will provide an overview of common cancers, relating the symptoms of each and the nutrition-related side effects of treatment (radiation and systemic therapy) for RDs to consider.

Some types of cancers place patients at a higher risk for malnutrition, which requires more support from the Oncology Nutrition team. Other types of cancers have lower malnutrition risks; however, the patient population may have higher needs for information and evidence-based nutritional guidance from nutrition experts such as the Oncology RD. The increasing demand for credible food and nutrition information offers a prime example for nutrition education to be conducted in group settings at various cancer sites.

This webinar will focus on patient populations that may benefit from nutrition education in group settings. Discussion will cover educating different groups during active treatment within cancer clinics with multidisciplinary support starting from patient referrals, scheduling into an appropriate group and lastly, educating this particular target group.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify common symptoms during treatment with level of malnutrition risk and nutrition strategies to support patients.

  • Come up with creative methods to meet the growing demand from motivated patients for evidence-based, credible, consistent nutrition information in a cancer clinic setting.

  • Introduce an approach to reach more patients, who, RDs may be seeing on a recurring basis for 1 to 1 and add a group-style nutrition education.
