HOW TO PREVENT AND TREAT GOUT: MODERN APPROACHES TO AN ANCIENT DISEASE
Gout is known as the disease of kings and the king of diseases. It is a metabolic disorder and the most common form of inflammatory arthritis. Rates are rising globally with an estimated prevalence of 41 million. Obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and diet are important risk factors. Gout itself is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease. The good news is, there is a lot we can do to prevent and treat gout with diet and lifestyle. This session will focus on the latest measures for preventing and treating gout including diet, lifestyle, dietary supplements and medication. No one needs to suffer with gout, gain the information and skills to help your patients get rid of gout for good.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Define gout and uric acid.


  • Review the etiology of gout - how does it develop and what factors are at play.


  • Identify risk factors for gout including diet, lifestyle, comorbid conditions and genetics.


  • Discuss evidenced-based treatment of gout including medication, dietary supplements, diet and lifestyle.


  • Identify patient and clinician resources.
