EBT for Stress and Obesity
SWITCH OFF THE DRIVE FOR STRESS EATING: THE SCIENCE AND TOOLS OF OPTIMAL RESILIENCE
Research has shown that a major underlying cause of overeating and obesity is physiological stress overload, which decreases access to natural rewards. Learn about the brain’s natural pathways that switch off stress, activate the brain’s reward system, and deactivate the drive to overeat. All people have these pathways and, as a dietitian and health professional, you can share the science and practice of resilience with your patients. Integrate these concepts into your clinical practice for treating disordered eating, binge eating, and mindless eating and the chronic stress associated with obesity (BMI of 35+). This course is an introduction to Emotional Brain Training (EBT), an evidenced-based method for stress resilience that Dr. Mellin has presented at FNCE, past Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) meetings, and state dietetic association meetings. Add your knowledge of this biologically-based method to your nutrition counseling toolkit to align yourself with the post-pandemic need for health professionals to integrate the latest stress resilience techniques into their clinical practices.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Describe the use of the brain’s resilience pathway in treating stress eating and obesity.

  • Differentiate the two types of brain circuits: reactive and resilient.

  • Describe two brain-based resiliency techniques for switching off the drive to overeat and promoting behavior change.

  • Apply brain resiliency concepts to an obesity case study.
