Malnutrition in Liver Disease
Malnutrition is highly prevalent and associated with unfavorable outcomes in patients with liver disease. The involvement of a skilled dietitian early in the disease process is critical in order to prevent and treat multifactorial nutrition challenges. Dietitians must be able to assess, prioritize and manage the complex nutrition challenges in order to ensure the best care possible for patients with liver disease.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify factors contributing to malnutrition in chronic liver disease.

  • Explain metabolic alterations in liver disease.

  • Discuss nutrition requirements of liver disease.

  • Identify goals of Nutrition Therapy in hepatic failure.

  • List nutrition goal priorities for malnourished patients with liver disease.

Mercedes Laudano

Mercedes Laudano is a Registered Dietitian in the Metro Washington DC area, licensed in Washington, D.C. and Maryland. Mercedes attended London Metropolitan University where she obtained her Masters Degree in Nutrition, after earning her B.S. in Science and Nutrition at University of the District of Columbia. In addition to her educational background and training, Mercedes also holds various certifications. She is a Board-CertifiedNutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) and a Certified Clinical Transplant Dietitian (CCTD). Mercedes is Bilingual in Spanish and English. She is deeply committed to providing the best quality care according to evidence-based nutrition guidelines and has had valuable work experience in a variety of settings, including dialysis centers, community nutrition (WIC), hospital clinical, and long-term care.

Mercedes has spent 10 years as a Clinical Dietitian at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, helping patients with a variety of medical conditions to optimize their nutrition. As an advanced practitioner in the nutrition care of kidney transplant candidates and recipients, she specializes in educating and preparing patients meet the nutritional requirements for transplant.
