Hypoglycemia: A Better Approach
HYPOGLYCEMIA: A BETTER APPROACH
Hypoglycemia is the most common endocrine emergency. It is characterized by a reduction in plasma glucose concentration to a level that may induce symptoms or signs such as altered mental status and/or sympathetic nervous system stimulation. This condition typically arises from abnormalities in the mechanisms involved in glucose homeostasis. It can occur in people with or without diabetes. Studies estimate 30% of people with diabetes experience serious hypoglycemic episodes annually. So, it is very important for the health providers to examine the clinical spectrum and burden of hypoglycemia so adequate control measures can be implemented against this life-threatening complication. The goal for the health care providers is to empower patients with the tools to monitor hypoglycemia, making them aware of the risks and focusing on available preventive strategies along with an individualized plan of treatment. This webinar will focus on provider identification of hypoglycemia, treatment plan decisions and patient education.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Examine prevalence and consequences of hypoglycemia in diabetes patients.

  • Review risk factors for hypoglycemia.

  • Discuss strategies to minimize the incidence of hypoglycemia.

  • Understand the Rule of 15 treatment for hypoglycemia.

FOR CDCESs: This Course Qualifies for CE Credit!

To satisfy the requirement for renewal of certification according to the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE, www.cbdce.org), courses must relate to diabetes and be part of the list of recognized providers of the CBDCE. The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is listed as an CBDCE recognized provider. Because Dietitian Central has been granted accreditation by the CDR, it therefore meets the criteria as an approved provider of CEs for CDCESs by the CBDCE. The CBDCE does not directly approve continuing education for any specific webinar or self study course.
