Nourishing the Microbiome Nation With Healthy Diet And Lifestyle Habits
NOURISHING THE MICROBIOME NATION WITH HEALTHY DIET AND LIFESTYLE HABITS
A vast amount of research continues to support the profound role that the gut microbiome plays in human health beyond digestion and absorption. From autoimmunity and cardiometabolic issues to brain health and metabolism, understanding the impact of this internal ecosystem on overall wellness is critical for preventing and addressing chronic health concerns. Additionally, recent evidence is emerging around the association between optimal microbial balance and the potential improved ability to fight and recover from infections like the recent coronavirus. A key component of achieving and maintaining a resilient gut microbial population is understanding how to implement realistic and effective dietary and lifestyle changes with patients. This presentation by integrative and eco-minded dietitian, Mary Purdy, will provide education and strategies around the optimal foods to include and why, those to reduce, and how to identify and minimize potential gut disruptors. It will also address the intersection between environmental health and microbiome status, from soil health to pesticides and other chemical inputs. Practical ideas and suggestions on creative ways to increase beneficial foods such as those rich in fiber, polyphenols, and prebiotics as well as tips for improving behavioral change will be highlighted.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Discuss the role of the microbiome in human health.

  • Describe the positive and negative impacts of specific foods and environmental inputs on the balance of the microbial population in the human intestinal tract.

  • Implement practical dietary and lifestyle strategies for supporting the human gut microbiome.
