Calcium and Osteoporosis and Bone Fracture Prevention
THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING CALCIUM AND OSTEOPOROSIS/BONE FRACTURE PREVENTION: THE RESEARCH MAY SURPRISE YOU
Worldwide, one out of every two women and one out of every four men are at risk for developing osteoporosis-related bone fractures. Caucasian and Asian women are at the highest risk, although men and people of all ethnic backgrounds experience bone fractures as they age. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, 1 in every 3 women 50 years and older will suffer an osteoporotic fracture and this rate increases to 1 in 2 for women 60 and over. Even younger women, especially those who use certain contraceptives (e.g. Depo-Provera) may have elevated risk of fractures. Ingesting more calcium, either from milk and dairy or by using supplements, is the most common dietary recommendation to osteoporosis/bone fracture prevention. Yet, this dietary approach is one of the most controversial nutrition issue as support for it from scientific research is largely lacking. Furthermore, the use of some calcium sources have been associated in detrimental side effects, including increased risk of heart disease. The goal of this presentation is to summarize available literature regarding calcium intake and bone fractures.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Summarize calcium recommendations and compare them with dietary intake.

  • Review available research findings regarding the association between calcium intake and bone fractures.
