Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
The incidence of the autoimmune condition "Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis," which accounts for the majority of hypothyroidism cases, is fast growing. Not only is this condition potentially preventable, but it can be addressed and well managed with dietary and lifestyle shifts. Dietitians are well positioned to help support patients who may not be aware of how poor dietary patterns and a fast-paced lifestyle may affect autoimmunity and specifically the thyroid. This “food as medicine” themed presentation will provide insights into numerous elements of thyroid and immune function, discuss signs and symptoms and provide guidance on addressing dietary insufficiencies, possible food sensitivities as well as stress levels.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Describe basics of how the thyroid functions.

  • Identify signs and symptoms of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis as well as diet/lifestyle factors that may be contributing to exacerbation of the condition.

  • Implement easy and helpful dietary and lifestyle strategies that may help support both thyroid function and the immune system.
