UPDATE ON GESTATIONAL DIABETES: THE METABOLIC ENVIRONMENT IN MOTHER AND CHILD
Gestational diabetes (GDM) has become one of the major medical complications among pregnant women and has doubled in the last decade.

As GDM is a complex endocrinology disorder caused by multiple factors, this webinar will focus on the causes and consequences of gestational diabetes and what health care professionals can do to help this specific population. This webinar will help to answer these questions:

  1. What is the GDM Diet?
  2. What are the guidelines for checking blood glucose levels and numbers to achieve?
  3. What are needs for carbohydrate, protein and fat?
  4. What are hints for exercise, supplements, and lifestyle management for GDM?
  5. What are medications used for GDM?
Upon successful completion of this two-hour course, the participant will have a better understanding of:
  • The pathophysiology of GDM.

  • The specifics of the GDM diet.


  • Recent recommendations on carbohydrate: high or low.

  • Lifestyle factor changes needed for GDM - exercise, sleep, supplements, etc..

To satisfy the requirement for renewal of certification according to the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE, www.ncbde.org), courses must relate to diabetes and be part of the list of recognized providers of the NCBDE. The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is listed as an NCBDE recognized provider. Because Dietitian Central has been granted accreditation by the CDR, it therefore meets the criteria as an approved provider of CEs for CDEs by the NCBDE. The NCBDE does not directly approve continuing education for any specific webinar or self study course.

About the Presenter: Susan Dopart, MS, RD, CDE

Susan B. Dopart, MS, RD, CDE, is a nutrition and fitness consultant who has been in private practice for more than 25 years. Susan specializes in child and adult medical nutrition-related issues associated with insulin resistance, diabetes and endocrinology, cancer, PCOS and exercise. Before establishing her own practice, Susan worked at UCLA as both a medical and kidney dietitian.

Susan has written and contributed to multiple publications, including The Huffington Post, SELF Magazine, UCLA Medicine, Sports and Cardiovascular Nutritionists SCAN publications, Diabetes Health and Diabetes Forecast.

Susan is the author of A Recipe for Life by the Doctor's Dietitian, Healthy You, Healthy Baby: A Mother's Guide to Gestational Diabetes, A Healthy Baker's Dozen: Gluten-free low sugar cookies, and 101 Ways to Control your Diabetes.

She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and conducts weekly workshops in Motivational Interviewing for clinicians wanting to learn collaborative language skills to assist with behavior change.
