Low-Carb/High Protein Diets vs Plant-Based Diets on Cardiovascular Disease
THE IMPACT OF LOW-CARB/HIGH PROTEIN DIETS VS PLANT-BASED DIETS ON CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
Plant-based diets and low-carbohydrate/high protein (LCHP) diets could not be any different. Plant-based diets emphasize the importance of adequate intake of such foods as fruits, vegetables, grain, especially whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. Most of these foods constitute a good source of naturally found carbohydrates. In contrast, LCHP diets recommend unlimited use of meats and animal products, including high-fat items, such as cheese and cream with limited intake of carbohydrate-containing foods, low-carbohydrate vegetables. The latter diets are increasingly popular. Findings from some studies have shown improvement in some biomarkers of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including serum cholesterol and blood glucose control. As a result, some dietitians and other health professionals have begun recommending LCHP diet to prevent some chronic health problems, such as CVD. The focus of this presentation will be on the impact of both plant-based diet and LCHP diets on atherosclerosis, the underlying cause of the number one cause of mortality: heart disease. Findings from both animal and human studies have shown that LCHP diet induce atherosclerosis and, in spite of any potential beneficial impact on CVD risk factors, should not be recommended as they exacerbate risk of heart disease.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the principles of plant-based and LCHP diets.

  • Summarize the impact of plant-based and LCHP diets on CVD risk factors.

  • Gain better insight on the effect of plant-based and LCHP diets on atherosclerosis.
