Unintended Weight Loss in Older Adults
Older adults are often at increased risk for unintended weight loss. Dietitians need to be equipped with the tools to provide appropriate interventions to address unintended weight loss. This course will look at increasing calories through food first, medical nutrition supplements and tube feeding with ethical considerations. Every step of the nutrition care process will be looked from assessment to monitoring and evaluation. After this course the dietitian will confident in providing interventions with optimal outcomes for unintended weight loss in older adults.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the physiology of aging.

  • Determine when to use food, supplements, or tube feedings to address unintended weight loss in older adults.

  • Recognize potential ethical considerations in tube feeding in older adults.

  • Feel more confident in providing successful outcomes for unintended weight loss in older adults.

Katie Dodd

Katie Dodd, MS, RD, CSG, LD, FAND, lives in Medford, OR and works at VA Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics (VA SORCC). She is an advanced level practice dietitian in Home Based Primary Care, providing nutritional care in homes of Veterans. Katie is also a Board Certified Specialist in Geriatric Nutrition and Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She received her MS from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale in 2008 and her BS from California State University, Chico in 2006. She is mom to Gavin and Emily. In her spare time she enjoys hiking, rock hounding, spending time with family, going to church, and cooking.
