Nutrition Care for Binge Eating Disorder
NUTRITION CARE FOR BINGE EATING DISORDER
Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is one of the five eating disorder (ED) diagnoses. Many Registered Dietitians (RDs) may have patients with BED that are not diagnosed properly because the criteria for BED is often misunderstood or misapplied. BED is not a 'disorder of overeating' or diagnosed based on weight status. It is a serious ED that needs the same standard of treatment as other EDs involving a medical doctor, an RD, and therapeutic counseling. BED can be challenging to identify as well as to treat, especially for those RDs not trained in working with EDs. This webinar will provide information about identification, diagnosis, and treatment of BED. The focus will be on the RD perspective and nutrition counseling. Case studies will be discussed to provide more in-depth application of information presented.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify binge eating disorder (BED).

  • Distinguish BED diagnosis from other disordered eating diagnoses.

  • Explain the overall treatment process for BED.

  • Describe aspects of nutrition counseling that are important for success in BED treatment.

  • Apply learned principles to case study examples.
