Diabetes and Pregnancy: The Role of Dietitians
DIABETES AND PREGNANCY: THE ROLE OF DIETITIANS
Diabetes can cause problems during pregnancy for women and their developing babies. Poor control of diabetes during pregnancy increases the chances for birth defects and serious complications for the pregnant women. Proper healthcare before and during pregnancy can help prevent birth defects and other health problems. Research has shown that Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) by registered dietitians is the primary intervention in the management of diabetes during pregnancy. It leads to improved perinatal outcomes and is a key component of glycemic control. This webinar will help you understand the goal for women with diabetes to meet all the nutrition needs of the fetus and mother while additionally maintaining maternal normoglycemia. We will discuss the rationale for meal planning and also benefits and contraindications of exercise during pregnancy.
Upon successful completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • List the nutrition goals for pregnancy complicated with diabetes.

  • Describe carbohydrate distribution and modifications in meal plan based on blood glucose control.

  • Explain the benefits of exercise on blood glucose levels.

  • Identify contraindications of exercise during pregnancy.
