TRENDS IN 2020: UNRAVELING THE KETOGENIC DIET, INTERMITTENT FASTING AND INTUITIVE EATING
Although 2020 has been a whirlwind, some new (and old) diet trends are emerging. Our patients have been struggling this year to control weight and have faced many food challenges regarding what to purchase or what to eat. NO doubt you have already been asked "What do you think about this diet?" Food bloggers, nutrition experts and Industry insiders are constantly on the lookout for the newest diet trend each year and this information is seeping its way into our patients’ kitchens. What nutrition advice would you give your patients about these diets? Are these trends healthy or should we leave them in the past?

In this one hour webinar, we will investigate a few of the latest diets that may be sticking around for a while including the Ketogenic Diet, Intermittent Fasting, and eating during a global pandemic. Participants will learn the science behind these diets and what the research indicates for use regarding weight loss or health improvements. We will also review some of the latest foods that are predicted to be the newest "healthy eating trends" for 2021.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand more about the psychological and socio economic difficulties for our patients in 2020.


  • Identify the latest diet trends including Ketogenic, Intermittent Fasting, intuitive Eating and the history behind these.


  • Understand the science and research behind these diets and which patient population may benefit from this.


  • Be able to discuss these diets with patients, including patients who are seeking or have already had bariatric surgery.


  • Help patients implement these diets using simple strategies and meal plans.


  • Learn about the latest Food and Beverage Trends in 2019 and what you may be seeing on the grocery store shelves this year.

About the Presenter: Holly Herrington, MS, RD, LDN, CDE
Holly Herrington

Holly Herrington MS, RD, LDN, CDE has been a Registered Dietitian for 8 years and is in her third year as a Certified Diabetes Educator. Holly has served as clinical dietitian in the Center for Lifestyle Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago for seven years. While there, Holly co-authored textbook chapters on nutrition for bariatric surgery and weight regain following bariatric surgery. She has been a guest lecturer and presenter at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), The Obesity Society (TOS) and a faculty speaker at the Obesity Summit 2015.

Holly received undergraduate degrees in Marketing and Human Sciences from Mississippi State University as well as a degree in Dietetics and Nutrition from the University of Mississippi. Holly completed her dietetic internship and master's degree in Clinical Nutrition from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. She worked as both an inpatient and outpatient dietitian at Rush before joining Northwestern in 2009. She is certified in Adult Weight Management, levels 1 and 2.

Holly has been a requested expert for media outlets including FOX News Chicago and ABC7 Chicago, and has been featured in US News and World Report, Men's Health and the Chicago Tribune. Her clinical interests include weight loss/bariatric surgery, diabetes management, cardiovascular health, gastrointestinal health and prenatal nutrition.
