Developing Eating Plans
DEVELOPING EATING PLANS: STRUCTURE FOR DISORDERED EATING CLIENTS AND BEYOND
Registered Dietitians (RDs) are taught how to calculate nutrition needs and develop eating plans, often using exchanges, during college coursework and the dietetic internship. Many times these kinds of eating plans can promote dieting and rigid eating patterns, which are risk factors for disordered eating (DE). In addition, for RDs who work with clients who already struggle with DE, strict eating plans can encourage DE behaviors like calorie counting, restriction, and compensation. This webinar will discuss options for developing eating plans that give clients a structure for guidance while working on innate eating skills. Eating plan options including modified exchange lists, the plate method, and pattern guides will be presented.Case study examples will be given to help understand how to apply these plan methods in practice.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • State how traditional eating plan methods can promote unhealthy behaviors.

  • List eating plan options that provide structure without promoting dieting.

  • Recognize types of clients that would benefit from different types of eating plans.

  • Indicate how to use eating plans in nutrition counseling.
