The Biggest Dietary Misconceptions Among Vegetarians
THE BIGGEST DIETARY MISCONCEPTIONS AMONG VEGETARIANS
The popularity of vegetarian diets, including a vegan diet, seem to be increasing for reasons that include ethical considerations regarding the treatment of animals, environmental impact of the animal agriculture, and personal health. Vegetarians gain their knowledge regarding vegetarian nutrition from a variety of sources. These include documents from professional organizations (e.g., Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics), advocacy groups (e.g., Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine), documentaries (e.g., Forks over knifes) and some influential vegetarian individuals. Unfortunately, not all information regarding vegetarian nutrition is consistent with the best available evidence. Sometimes, information is selectively quoted or reflects personal bias. This is true regarding both macro and micronutrients and regarding the association of vegetarian diets with health outcomes. This lecture will review the most popular misconceptions regarding vegetarian diets and provide a comparative analysis on the best available evidence from published studies.
Upon successful completion of this two-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Summarize the most prevalent misconceptions among vegetarians.

  • Evaluate the misconceptions among vegetarians with available evidence from published studies.
