Childhood Antecedents of Eating Disorders
Eating disorders don't develop in a vacuum. They develop over the course of months and years, heavily influenced by early childhood feeding practices that are common in today's society. Using research evidence and videos, this webinar will demonstrate how and why it is crucially important to understand clients' lived experience in regard to the feeding relationship when in recovery from an eating disorder, so that practitioners are better-equipped to treat this challenging client population.

Please note: If Ellyn Satter's Division of Responsibility (sDOR) is a new term or concept for you, we recommend taking other Ellyn Satter webinars as listed in the "Other Webinars by this Presenter/Organization" section at the bottom of the page.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Describe normal eating and how it can develop naturally through appropriate feeding dynamics.

  • Recognize the research evidence for the relationship between poor feeding practices and disrupted eating behaviors.

  • Identify common feeding practices that contribute to the development of disrupted eating management, attitudes, and behaviors.

About the Presenters

Cristen Harris, PhD, RDN, CSSD, CD, CEP, FAND
Cristen Harris

Cristen Harris is a registered dietitian nutritionist, certified sports dietitian and exercise physiologist. She has over 25 years of experience in a wide variety of settings including clinical care (hospital, sub-acute and long-term care), fitness and rehabilitation, community health, higher education, research, and private practice. Dr. Harris currently lives, plays and works in the Seattle area where she is an Associate Professor and Didactic Program Director at Bastyr University. In this dual role, she educates and advises future nutrition professionals, and researches factors that influence eating behaviors. She also maintains a small but robust private practice, specializing in the treatment of eating disorders and child feeding issues. Her approach to counseling, education, research and parenting is greatly influenced by Satter's Feeding Dynamics and Eating Competence models that incorporate flexibility, attunement, trust, and responsiveness to body signals. Dr. Harris is passionate about facilitating the paradigm shifts in how youth and adults view their bodies, food and eating (with trust and joy!); how health and nutrition professionals advise clients and the public on food and eating (with the goal of eating competence!); and how parents feed their children (with an appropriate division of responsibility).
