Extreme Picky Eating
Increasingly, RDs working with the pediatric population encounter beyond-typical, or "extreme" picky eating. This webinar explores working with parents of children who eat so limited an amount or variety of foods that it impacts the child's social, emotional or physical development. This definition of "extreme" picky eating also includes families with conflict or worry about eating where the child is at risk of further intervention.

This webinar builds a foundation of understanding, beginning with differentiation of typical and extreme picky eating. We will consider the challenges a child may bring into the feeding relationship, including: sensory integration difficulties, autism diagnoses, temperament, and medical and oral-motor concerns. Understanding the parent experience helps explain why parents find themselves stuck in counterproductive feeding patterns including pressured and coercive feeding. We will conclude with a discussion of the negative impact of pressured feeding on intake. Understanding the role of feeding challenges and pressured feeding provides the framework of understanding for further instruction on this topic. If pressuring feeding tactics play a role in food avoidance, how does this inform treatment?

Note: If Ellyn Satter's Division of Responsibility (sDOR) is a new term or concept for you, we recommend taking other Ellyn Satter webinars as listed in the "Other Webinars by this Presenter/Organization" section at the bottom of the page.
