LEAKY GUT SYNDROME: OVERVIEW AND CLINICAL APPLICATION
With the recent buzz revolving digestive health, you have probably come across the term “leaky gut syndrome.” While it is not yet a well agreed upon diagnosis among health care practitioners, new research points to gut imbalances as the root cause of many conditions including allergies, autoimmune disease and digestive distress. Given the relationship food has on digestion, it is imperative that dietitians educate themselves on the role food has on the physical integrity of the gastrointestinal tract. This presentation by Functional Medicine Dietitian Liz DeJulius will provide an overview of eating for proper digestion and hone in on what constitutes a suspected “leaky gut.” Participants will learn how to coach patients and clients who are looking to improve their digestive function and, in result, improve their overall health and wellness. She will explain how to assess diet and provide interventions that use a food-first approach. Additionally, viewers will understand the relationship that other lifestyle factors have on GI health and how to instill life-long change rather than a quick fix diet.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the definition of intestinal permeability, also known as LEAKY GUT SYNDROME.


  • Familiarize themselves with the FOUR R PROGRAM for healing intestinal permeability.


  • Know the basic components of a gut-specific, anti-inflammatory diet.


  • Identify additional lifestyle factors, aside from diet, that can contribute to GI imbalances.

Liz DeJulius

Liz DeJulius is a Registered, Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist specializing in Functional Medicine Nutrition. Liz earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Dietetics from Miami University, a Master’s of Science in Nutrition Education from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, and completed her dietetic internship at the Cleveland Clinic. Liz practiced functional medicine on a large-scale at the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine, as well in a small setting at Alliance Integrative Medicine in Cincinnati, OH. She is the owner of Liz DeJulius Nutrition where she provides virtual nutrition coaching services to busy women seeking real results and sustainable habits through lifestyle management and mindful eating. She is especially interested in culinary nutrition and teaching individuals how to make cooking a realistic part of their plan, no matter the skill level.
