Specific Carbohydrate Diet
SPECIFIC CARBOHYDRATE DIET FOR GASTROENTEROLOGY PATIENTS: WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY?
The pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is thought to be multifactorial, involving a genetically susceptible individual being exposed to a yet-to-be identified environmental trigger or set of triggers. There is growing evidence that IBD may be associated with diets high carbohydrates and is linked with malabsorption of specific carbohydrates.

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), a very restrictive, unconventional diet plan that severely limits most carbs, claims to induce and maintain drug-free remission in patients with IBD. But does this actually work for our patients? Is this diet nutritionally sound and can it provide relief from Gastroenterology symptoms while mainlining good health?

In this webinar you will learn the ins and outs of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, what patients may benefit from this and how to implement this diet in your patient population.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the rationale and the science behind using the Specific carbohydrate Diet (SCD).
  • Understand what the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) is and what populations it addresses such as:

    • Inflammatory Bowel Disease including Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease
    • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
    • Gastroparesis, Diverticulitis
    • Additional medical populations that may benefit from the SCD including Autism and Obesity

  • Discuss a treatment approach with patients who presents with IBD/IBS including medical, psychological, dietary interventions.
  • Discuss nutrition complications and deficiencies that may arise form long term use of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD).
