DISORDERED EATING IN ATHLETES AND RELATIVE ENERGY DEFICIENCY IN SPORTS
Eating disorders and disordered eating...is there a difference? This webinar will cover the latest findings on "eating disorders" and the most updated DSM-V criteria for evaluation, as well as how it differs from "disordered eating." In addition, it will discuss the transition in research from the Female Athlete Triad to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). The webinar will evaluate the health and performance consequences from RED-S and how that plays a role in a variety of areas including hormonal disturbances and bone health. Prevention and treatment plans as well as return-to-play guidelines for athletes will also be discussed.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify the basic characteristics of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.


  • Understand the transition in research from the Female Athlete Triad to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).


  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of disordered eating and RED-S.


  • Recommend strategies to help combat disordered eating RED-S.


  • Know the essential people and practices involved in successful treatment of RED-S in male and female athletes.

About the Presenter: Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD

Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD is a registered dietitian and Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. She focuses on overall health, wellness and sports nutrition. Amy has worked with the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, TCU Athletics, Ben Hogan Sports Medicine, Dairy Farmers of America and more. She is a co-author of Swim, Bike, Run, Eat and nutrition contributor to retired NFL Player Donald Driver’s book, The 3-D Body Revolution. She is a writer for Women’s Running Magazine and is the owner of RD Career Jumpstart, a business designed to help dietetic students, interns and new registered dietitians determine and take the steps necessary to reach their dream career.

With a bachelor’s degree in communications and a master’s degree in exercise and sports nutrition, Amy is passionate about marrying the two to provide quality, science-based nutrition information through speaking, media, writing and consulting. Amy is an ambassador spokesperson for the American Heart Association and National Dairy Council, partner with Potatoes USA, a speaker and consultant for Gatorade Sports Science Institute and is a media dietitian for RDTV where she does food and nutrition TV segments nation-wide. Amy has over 600 media placements in a variety of TV, radio and print outlets.
