INSULIN PUMP THERAPY AND CONTINUOUS GLUCOSE MONITORING DEVICES: TOOLS FOR OPTIMAL DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT
With the increasing number of diabetes patients on insulin therapy, including children and adults with Type 1 Diabetes, patients with Type 2 Diabetes on Multiple Daily Injections (MDI), and women with uncontrolled diabetes in pregnancy/Gestational Diabetes, comes the importance of helping patients to attain optimal glycemic control. Optimal glycemic control decreases the risk of diabetes complications and improves quality of life. Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) and Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs) have the knowledge needed to help these patients with all aspects of diabetes management. Our nutrition expertise is paramount in teaching patients carbohydrate counting, a necessary tool needed to wear an insulin pump. With additional knowledge and skill in providing insulin pump therapy, RDN/CDEs can go beyond conventional education with an expanded scope of practice to train patients on the use of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring devices.

To satisfy the requirement for renewal of certification according to the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE, www.ncbde.org), courses must relate to diabetes and be part of the list of recognized providers of the NCBDE. The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is listed as an NCBDE recognized provider. Because Dietitian Central has been granted accreditation by the CDR, it therefore meets the criteria as an approved provider of CEs for CDEs by the NCBDE. The NCBDE does not directly approve continuing education for any specific webinar or self study course.

Ilene Cohen, MS, RDN, CDN, CDE, E-RYT, C-IAYT, is a NYC-based, nationally recognized Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher, and IAYT-certified yoga therapist. Ilene has been an RD since 2000 and a yoga teacher since 2007 and was recently credentialed as a Certified Yoga Therapist by the International Association of Yoga Therapists.
