Family-Based Nutrition Counseling
FAMILY-BASED NUTRITION COUNSELING AND DISORDERED EATING TREATMENT
Family-based treatment (FBT) has now been used for over a decade in treatment of anorexia nervosa (Lock & LeGrange 2005). Methods studied and used for FBT originally did not involve registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) or any nutrition counselor at all. Yet standards of care for disordered eating (DE) treatment have involved nutrition counseling with an RDN for ages (JAND 2011). The research supporting the role of the RDN in disordered eating treatment should fit with the research supporting FBT since both are true. How can we as RDNs be involved with FBT? How can we provide family-based nutrition counseling in other ways? Is family-based nutrition counseling beneficial for all types of DE? This webinar will discuss family-based nutrition counseling and how dietitians can counsel families to aid in treatment of children and adolescents with DE. Ways to provide the support and direction needed for families will be discussed, and case study examples will be examined.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Define different types of family-based counseling for disordered eating (DE).

  • Understand how to provide family-based nutrition counseling.

  • Decide when family-based nutrition counseling is appropriate for DE treatment.

  • Apply learned principles to case study examples.
