Insulin Pump Therapy
INSULIN PUMP THERAPY: GUIDING PATIENTS TOWARD OPTIMAL DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT
With the increasing number of diabetes patients on insulin therapy, including children and adults with Type 1 Diabetes, patients with Type 2 Diabetes on Multiple Daily Injections (MDI), and women with uncontrolled diabetes in pregnancy/Gestational Diabetes, comes the importance of helping patients to attain optimal glycemic control. Optimal glycemic control decreases the risk of diabetes complications and improves quality of life. Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) and Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs) have the knowledge needed to help these patients with all aspects of diabetes management. Our nutrition expertise is paramount in teaching patients carbohydrate counting, a necessary tool needed to wear an insulin pump. With additional knowledge and skill in providing insulin pump therapy, RDN/CDEs can go beyond conventional education with an expanded scope of practice to train patients on the use of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring devices. Whether you are a CDE, diabetes educator or an RDN looking to understand more about the use of technology in diabetes management to empower your patients about their choices, this webinar will be a great asset to your practice. This session will also empower RDNs and CDEs to expand their scope of practice with this additional skill set.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Define insulin pump therapy and terminology, including basal/bolus therapy, insulin to carbohydrate ratios, insulin sensitivity factors, and insulin on board.

  • Identify good patient candidates for insulin pump therapy.

  • Become familiar with the components of an insulin pump training session from pre pump to post pump education.

  • Learn about the expanded scope of practice of the RDN/CDE in providing insulin pump therapy.

  • Understand algorithms to calculate patient's starting basal insulin rates, insulin to carbohydrate ratios (I:C ratios), and Insulin Sensitivity factors (ISF) for pediatric patients, adults and pregnant patients.

  • Understand advanced pump features, including square wave and dual wave boluses, and how our expertise in nutrition can help patients to utilize these features.

  • Learn about continuous glucose monitoring devices used in conjunction with insulin pump therapy.
FOR CDEs: This Course Qualifies for CE Credit!

To satisfy the requirement for renewal of certification according to the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE, www.ncbde.org), courses must relate to diabetes and be part of the list of recognized providers of the NCBDE. The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is listed as an NCBDE recognized provider. Because Dietitian Central has been granted accreditation by the CDR, it therefore meets the criteria as an approved provider of CEs for CDEs by the NCBDE. The NCBDE does not directly approve continuing education for any specific webinar or self study course.
