BMI and the Assessment of Weight in Older Adults
BMI AND THE ASSESSMENT OF WEIGHT IN OLDER ADULTS
BMI is a commonly used tool to assess weight. Those with a BMI of greater than 25 are classified as overweight and all too frequently, recommendations are made for weight loss. However, making such a recommendation for an older adult could be detrimental. Research has shown that BMI ranges differ for older adults. This course will dig deep into the physiology of aging, what we know about BMI, and how to best assess weight in the older adult.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the physiology of aging.

  • Recognize optimal BMI ranges for older adults.

  • Define sarcopenia and how it relates to nutrition.

  • Feel more confident in assessing weight in older adults.
