Can anyone point me to some good resources for learning the basics about counseling bariatric surgery clients (assessment, kcal/pro needs, etc.)? I've done some Googling, but I want to make sure I'm using evidence-based resources that are widely used by other RDs in the field.

I work almost exclusively with bariatric patients. Currently I see 6-8 outpatients per day, if I'm not teaching any group classes that day. I have 60 minute slots. I think 6-7 outpatients per day is a nice work load. I stay busy through the day and can take adequate time to teach my patients what they need.

My program and surgeons have our pts follow a 2-wk pre-op diet. Week 1 is full liquids and week 2 is clear liquids. Post-op...the transition is week 1: clear liquids, week 2: full liquids, week 3/4: pureed, week 5: bariatric soft, week 6: bariatric regular

All that to say; they follow a clear liquid diet for 2 weeks. Any recommendations for supplements on the clear liquid diet. Some of my pati

Hi, I have a pt in ICU who is post op day 6 of duodenal switch. Required intubation. Will need EN support. Reviewing formula options, I am thinking about promote and adding prostat so that pt can rich protein needs with hypocaloric feeding. For first wk suggest 30ml/hour for PO intake, however as pt i approaching 2nd week, trying to figure out appropriate rate of EN infusion. Any ideas?

I am familiar with post-op recommendations for protein for
bariatric pt but what about calories? I know the focus is more on protein and fluids however I had a pt who could not tolerate po diet with subsequent TPN started. For the pt to be approved by Medicare at home pt has to meet 75% est needs via PN. I spoke with the infusion company and they stated that per Medicare guidelines 20-35kcal/kg

I am in the process of applying for my first job as an RD. I would really like to work in the clinical field and there is currently an opening in a bariatric clinic in my area. However, I am unsure if I would enjoy/be successful in this field.

What skills are needed to be successful as a bariatric RD? Is the field clinically challenging? Is this a good field to gain experience in weight manag

Is it just me or does anyone else dislike bariatric surgery? I'm so bothered by it. I just feel like removing a part of, or altering, a major organ is not a good idea.

Sure, I understand some drastic situations where bariatic surgery is warranted, but for the most part I just feel that there is another way to do this!

I do not feel like patients are being well screened or education pre-op

Can anyone offer any help or share the structure of your 6-month (1-monthly) pre-op bariatric nutrition program? A new bariatrics program is coming to the hospital in which I work, so I am starting from scratch. I have been able to find plenty of post-op info, diet, programs, etc...BUT, the pre-op nutritional counseling seems to be more of a grey area. Any help on topics and/or structure of anyon
