Aesthetic Sports
DISORDERED EATING, WEIGHT CLASSES, AND AESTHETIC SPORTS: HOW DIETITIANS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
The incidence of disordered eating (DE) is markedly higher in athletes who participate in weight-dependent or appearance-driven sports (Bratlund-Sanda & Sundgot-Borgen, 2013). How can dietitians effectively provide nutrition counseling for clients in these sports? It is vital for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) to understand the specifics of weight classes along with how weight class goals affect nutritional intake and vice versa. For athletes in aesthetic sports, RDNs need to be able to recommend adequate nutrition and help the client maintain a healthy body while supporting competition goals. It can seem like eating well conflicts with MAKING WEIGHT and keeping the right body type for aesthetics. As dietitians, we need to help clients, coaches, and families see that nutrition plays a key role in maintaining a healthy weight and helping achieve performance goals. This one-hour webinar will discuss how to approach these situations. An overview of weight classes and how clients can make weight without engaging in DE will be covered. Providing nutrition counseling for athletes in aesthetic sports will be discussed. Information will be given regarding issues related to disordered eating and how dietitians can counsel these athletes to eat well. Case studies will be used to make the presented material relatable to actual practice.
Upon successful completion of this one-hour course, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify nutritional concerns for sports that involve weight classes and aesthetics.

  • Understand common goals of athletes participating in weight-dependent and appearance-driven sports.

  • Identify disordered eating patterns that arise out of weight and appearance goals.

  • Know how to use nutrition counseling skills to appropriately support performance goals and promote balanced eating.
